Tools

This is an overview of tools used in face painting. Some safety considerations are also included. Click on the picture to get an enlarged view.

Brushes:

·             Use sable or nylon brushes. Sable brushes are preferred, but nylon brushes last longer.

·             Use round tipped brushes.

·             Use small brushes for outlining and detailing.

·             Larger brushes are used for filling in large areas.

·             Wash out brushes thoroughly before painting with a new color.

Sponges:

·           Use to cover large areas.

·           Use the edges for detailing.

·           Sponges can be used for blending.

Paints:

·           Only use water-based cake makeup.  This kind of makeup has intense color and blends easily.

·           Water-based makeup is easily removable with soap and water.

·           Mix different colors to create even more shades.

·           Never paint over cuts, rashes, or broken skin.

·           If paint gets in the eyes, wash it out immediately with cold water.

Glitter:

·             Only use glitter that is 100% polyester.

·             Be sure that the glitter has NO metal or glass components.

·             Glitter with a hologram-effect reflects a lot of light and creates a rainbow of colors. This glitter creates the best sparkle.

Sequins:

·       Sequins create a dramatic, sparkling effect.

·       Stick sequins on with spirit gum (a special makeup glue for skin).

Moisturizing Cream:

·             Use moisturizer when the person you’re painting on has very dry skin.

·              Use an oil-free cream.

·             Apply moisturizer a few minutes before applying the paint.

·            Moisturizer can make the paint easier to remove, but this is usually not needed.

All of these tools can be purchased online or at your local craft store. Professional face paint can be purchased online by face painting companies such as Snazaroo.
